How to Enable the AHU–VAV OSS Adapter?

Overview

OSS (Optimized Start Stop) is a machine‑learning feature that automatically starts and stops HVAC equipment at the best possible time. This saves energy while ensuring comfort by making sure zones reach their target temperature exactly when needed.

1. Required Devices

For this setup, you need two types of Devices:

  • AHUs (Air Handling Units) – the equipment that conditions and supplies air.

  • VAVs (Variable Air Volume Units) – the units that receive and regulate airflow in individual zones.

You can also include FCUs (Fan Coil Units) in other OSS configurations, but this guide focuses specifically on the VAV–AHU combination.

2. Check Device Points and Schedule

OSS depends on both Device Points and Schedules to operate correctly. Before creating the adapter, make sure your devices include the following points, and these devices are linked to an active Schedule.

Required Points:

For VAVs (Base Devices):

  • Zone Air Temperature Sensor

  • Zone Air Temperature Cooling Setpoint

  • Zone Air Temperature Heating Setpoint

  • Run Status

  • Occupied Mode (must be writable)

For AHUs (Reference Devices):

  • Run Status

  • Occupied Mode (must be writable)

3. Create the OSS Adapter

Once your devices and schedules are ready, you can create the OSS Adapter.

  1. Go to Add OSS Adapter → Add New Adapter



  1. In the Select Devices step:

    • Enter a name (e.g., “AHU–VAV OSS Adapter”) and a short description.

    • Choose VAV as the Base Device type.

    • Choose AHU as the Reference Device type.

  1. In the Add Points step:

    • The system will automatically list the required points for both Base and Reference devices.

    • Map each field to the correct device point.

    • For any fields with multiple options, choose the best fit or define aggregation rules (like averages).



  1. In the Review and Verify step:

    • Review all mapped points and check each device’s status.

    • Devices with missing Points or no Schedule will appear under Devices With Issues and won’t be included.

    • Only Completed Devices (those meeting all requirements) will be added to the adapter.

  1. Once everything looks correct and the completed devices are selected, click Save. OSS will start learning from your devices and automatically manage their start and stop times.

4 . Integrating the Building BI Dashboard

Within the Building BI module, there is a pre‑created template that allows you to visualise all the data gathered by your OSS Adapter. This gives you a clear view of how OSS is performing.

To set it up:

  1. Go to Building BI and, in the bottom left menu, select Templates

  1. In the Global Templates section, find the relevant template:

    • "OSS Dashboard [AHU-VAV] [ºC]" or

    • "OSS Dashboard [AHU-VAV] [ºF]"

Choose the one matching your temperature unit. Click the three dots and select Use template, then click Done.


  1. The dashboard will now appear with all insights collected from your OSS Adapter. Review the data to ensure it displays as expected. Once confirmed, click Publish.

After publishing, you can easily monitor OSS performance directly through Building BI.
Following these steps connects your AHU and VAV devices to OSS, enabling the system to continuously learn and adjust equipment start/stop times to maximise energy savings while ensuring occupant comfort.
