Multi-Point Trending Use Cases

Multi-Point Trending Use Cases

How does a building operator use the Trends feature in KODE OS? Below you may find the top three most common use cases for Multi-Point Trending in a Building. With the details provided in the tables, you will be able to demo these use cases on your own.

Water System Optimization

Scenario: The Chilled Water System in the building comprises chillers, chilled water pumps, and various sensors monitoring temperature and flow at key points.

Issue: The building’s energy manager wants to optimize chiller efficiency, but they’re noticing inconsistent cooling throughout the building.

Use Case for Multi-Point Trending:

  • The user trends the chilled water supply temperature, return temperature, pump speed, and the flow rate at various points in the system.

  • Additionally, they include the air handler unit (AHU) supplying air temperature to see how efficiently cold water is being distributed to different zones.

#2: Condenser Water System Monitoring and Diagnosis

Scenario: A large commercial building has a Condenser Water System consisting of a cooling tower, condenser pumps, and associated temperature and pressure sensors.

Issue: The building operators notice that the cooling tower is not maintaining the required condenser water temperature, leading to inefficiencies in cooling.

Use of Multi-Point Trending:

  • The operator selects trends for the condenser water return temperature, supply temperature, and condenser pump speed, along with the outside air temperature and cooling tower fan speed.

  • By plotting these variables on a single chart, the operator can see how the return temperature is fluctuating relative to the outside air temperature and pump operation.

Benefits:

  • Improved Fault Detection: The Multi-Trend Viewer shows how the fan’s inadequate response caused inefficiencies.

  • Faster Diagnosis: Without the need to look at multiple dashboards, the operator can quickly compare all relevant points, speeding up the time to resolution.

#3: Fan and AHU Coordination

Scenario: The building has multiple Air Handling Units (AHUs) and fans providing ventilation across different floors. Fans are critical in modulating air supply, while AHUs control the air temperature and humidity.

Issue: The building's energy usage spikes during peak occupancy hours, and the operations team wants to understand if the fans and AHUs are operating efficiently.

Use of Multi-Trend Viewer:

  • The team trends the fan speeds, static pressure, AHU discharge air temperatures, and humidity levels in key areas of the building.

  • They also trend the air temperatures being supplied to different zones to see how well the system is distributing conditioned air.

Benefits:

  • Optimized Energy Use: By trending fan and AHU data, the team can fine-tune the system to avoid over-conditioning, reducing wasted energy.

  • Improved Comfort: Ensuring air is distributed properly based on real-time conditions avoids over-cooling or overheating certain zones.
